Hag Hill rises above the disused Castlemain railway path near Wilverley and leads up towards the campsite at Setthorns and the forest ranger’s base. The disused track dated back to the 1847 line from Brockenhurst to Ringwood and is popular with walkers, runners and cyclists.

Accessed from the rise at the ridge above Yew tree Bottom car park , this area was a new discovery for us fairly recently – at an auspicious time as the heather was out in glorious abundance!
The Set Horns Inclosure edges the hill at the top and there are views of the area from the bridge on the railway track too.

Rather than a set route there are lots of tracks and paths – some steeper than others , but all affording great views and a variety of habitat. In the middle is an open area favoured by cattle and New Forest ponies, which resembles a miniature Horsehoe Bottom. This can be great for a short walk or form part of a much longer trek using the railway line as a guide to explore other areas too.

Possibly due to varying heights and vegetation, the wires that traverse the hilltop seem to always host rows of birds , large and small!
