If you ever wondered what Community Action is, a brilliant example took place today in Brockenhurst – Thursday 26th February.

The footpath along Rhinefield Road ( Broadlands/New Forest Drive section)has become completely covered in  mud and plant debris after the long winter of floods and rain – making it impassable without wellies and dangerous for anyone not steady on their feet.

Brockenhurst Community Action group realised this would take a while to get sorted with so many other issues to deal with, so a quick WhatsApp call out resulted in 7 people turning up to clear the area – all done within 90 minutes and with plans under way to clear other nearby stretches soon.

One of the team, Karen Bladen, said “ If you cannot come along and help please give us a cheery wave as you go past!”

There is also the Spring Brush-Up Brockenhurst village clean-up on Saturday 21st March from 9 – 12.

“But shouldn’t this be done by some official body?” I hear you ask – maybe, but quick action by local volunteers got the job done and helps by reducing the number of tasks for the council, Forestry England or whichever official body is responsible.

Community Action aims to use volunteers to improve their local environment (as well as socially and economically), to empower local people and build a sense of community. All the appropriate authorities are consulted and risk assessments completed before any work takes place.
