This was a tough month for the new allotment holders with bitter cold and then too much rain – first the ground was frozen solid and then under water.

Despite this most seemed determined to make some progress and almost all plots have now been started.

We worked on our only two dry weekend days to get the fruit area established and added to it with some garlic and some rather potbound herbs I had left on our patio from last year. To surround the fruit trees and bushes we added some cyclamens and rhubarb plants. snowdrops and fritillaria – maybe a funny mix but within the scope of the potager approach. Later in the month a quick visit to the garden centres resulted in some more herbs – several mint varieties and some chives. Having noticed other people neatening up their plot edges we bought an edging too attachment too!

Back at home in the mini greenhouse, propogating is having mixed results – probably due to the extreme frosts and lack of sunshine. The radish seedlings are thriving and a couple of cucumber plants have popped up as well. Thankfully a few signs of spring are now appearing so hopefully March will bring better conditions. After a few dry days the allotment plots had dried out and the heavy clay soil is already looking a bit dusty and cracked – there are some challenges ahead for sure…
