Small car park by Holmsley Gatehouse, which is a holiday cottage.

A beautiful area of mixed woodland not far from the disused railway track and also near Holmsley campsite, which was developed on the old WW 2 base and has a RAF memorial onsite. The inclosure was first planted in 1811 and since WW2 other trees have been added – there are now conifers, oaks, sweet chestnut, birch, beech and holly.
In addition to the wood and healthland walks already featured there are enchanting tracks through the inclosure itself.

This has conifers and broadleaved trees, lots of tracks and streams for walking and cycling and offers walks of varying lengths to suit all. Birdwatchers have already spotted great grey shirke, black brant and Sabine’s gull within the inclosure since the start of 2023. Late April is a good time to enjoy a profusion of wood anenomes here and we have seen some stunning fungi in autumn.

The car park is not large and well hidden, so go early in busy seasons, or join the inclosure from the Castlemain track or from the lane across the heath.
