Allotment Tales : June 2021

June’s first half was mostly very warm and sunny, seeing lots of growth on the allotment plots and kept everyone busy watering – it was lovely though to finally have some delicious things to harvest! On our plot this was mostly strawberries, peas and wildflowers.

I was lucky to receive a garden centre voucher so invested in some small edging shears, another watering can and some pepper plants, leeks and alpines. I planted the last of the seedlings and some very puny tomato plants, which have since perked up a bit and a sad -looking courgette, which has also improved over the month.

Mid – June brought lots of rain for days on end – once it cleared there were many hours of weeding , but also lots of flowers bloomed. The wildflower bee bomb in a trough and the mini-meadow are now flourishing. Other summer jobs included netting the fruit bushes and tying up climbing plants.

The Alexandra Meadows allotments are looking fabulous now and are a source of great interest to passers-by. The plotholders Whatsapp group has had two main obsessions this month – not leaving the gate open and leatherjackets in the soil…

Overall, I would say that congratulations are in order – such much has been done that it is hard to believe that only 6 months ago the whole area was a sea of mud and weeds!
