Once the dismal weather had ended we found that the borage had collapsed, tomatoes given up completely and the peppers had blight. The second half of August was busy with clearing dead stuff and weeding – the local council has had to suspend green waste collections due to driver shortages, which has been a blow when the compost bin is overflowing already!

On a postive note, though , we have been picking and enjoying all the of the following in abundance – potatoes, peas, herbs, courgettes, lettuce and some rapsberries. Flowers are fabulous and our house is full of jugs and vases of asters, dahlias, sunflowers, wildflowers and sweet peas. My sad little potbound geraniums are huge floral displays and will be lovely to take back indoors over winter.

Leeks and beetroot are coming on well and I have filled gaps with some oak saplings to donate to those who want to plant trees once sturdy enough – maybe a local school ?

Now is the time to start thinking of what to put in overwinter and what will need moving or re-thinking.
